FAQ
CAN I SUBMIT MULTIPLE STORIES AND POEMS?
Due to the volume of submissions we receive, we have placed a maximum of one piece of prose and up to five poems.
WHAT DO I NEED TO INCLUDE IN MY SUBMISSION?
Within your submission, upload your piece as a .doc or .docx along with a brief author bio. If applicable, please include the following in your bio:
-
Major publications and awards
-
Any association or past correspondence with a guest or staff editor
-
Past publications in Belmont Story Review
IS THERE A THEME AND DO I HAVE TO FOLLOW IT?
Each volume of Belmont Story Review has a theme, but we do not set a theme before all the pieces have been chosen for publication. Once pieces have been chosen, our editors look through each piece and choose a theme that fits the publication as a whole.
WHAT'S THE WORD LIMIT?
Belmont Story Review asks that submissions be kept to under 8,000 words. Any stories exceeding that amount must be exceptional to be considered for publication. We will not publish novels, novellas or memoirs.
IS THERE A SUBMISSION FEE?
There is no submission fee.
HOW MUCH WILL YOU PAY FOR MY PIECE?
Belmont Story Review pays an honorarium of $100 for prose and $50 for poetry. This honorarium will be awarded as a check in US dollars to residents of the US and Canada, plus one free copy of the journal. To receive monetary payment, you must provide a W-9 form upon request, no exceptions. If you are outside the US or Canada or cannot provide a W9 form, we can offer no monetary payment, but, if we publish you, we are happy to send you payment in kind (aka, extra copies of the volume you are published in). If you are unable to receive a payment in these forms, we will be unable to pay you for your piece.
WILL YOU CONSIDER SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS?
Yes, we do consider simultaneous submissions. If your piece is accepted elsewhere during our reading period, please notify our editorial staff through Submittable by retracting your submission.
IF I REVISE MY PIECE AFTER SUBMISSION, CAN I SUBMIT A REVISED EDITION?
Once your piece has been submitted, we do not accept revised submissions.
CAN I SUBMIT SOMETHING THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN PUBLISHED ELSEWHERE?
We do not accept pieces that have already been published.
CAN I SUBMIT A WORK I HAVE TRANSLATED?
Belmont Story Review accepts poems in translation to English for the first time. It is the responsibility of the translator to acquire the rights for publication to their work, and will be required to submit proof of this prior to final acceptance for publication in any issue of the magazine.
HOW OFTEN DOES BSR PUBLISH AN ISSUE?
BSR publishes one volume (issue) of the magazine per year.
DOES BSR ACCEPT SUBMISSIONS FROM CURRENT BELMONT UNIVERSITY STUDENTS?
We do not accept submissions from current undergraduate or graduate students enrolled at Belmont University. Those who have graduated four years or more prior to the volume year may submit for publication. For example: Volume 9 is to be published in November 2024, so if you are a Belmont Alumnus that graduated before November 2020 you may submit your work.
